Concept project · Restaurant website

Your customers order from their phones. Does your website let them?

I redesigned the website of The Golden Magnolia, a fictional Southern restaurant, to show what a modern site does for a local business. Try both versions and feel the difference.

Fictional business. Ordering is simulated: nothing is sent, charged, or saved.

Measured on a phone

  • Text size on a phone4.4 px16 pxBase text size as displayed on a 390 px‑wide screen. Menu text: 4.4 px in the old menu list, 13.5 px in the new dish descriptions
  • Menu links on a phone10.3 px tall56 pxHeight as displayed: the old top navigation links, and the section links in the new ☰ menu
  • OrderingPhone call7 tapsFewest taps from picking a dish to a placed demo order, counting the tap into the name field, plus typing the name
  • Mobile viewportMissingIncludedPhones fit the page to their own screen instead of shrinking a desktop layout

All four measured on 24 October 2026 on the current versions of the two demo pages in this showcase, using Chromium phone emulation (390 × 844). These are measurements of the demo pages, not results from a real business.

Same restaurant. Same food. A very different first impression.

BeforeAfter

Before

  • Built for a desktop monitor, fixed 900 px wide
  • Small photos that undersell the food
  • Menu as a plain table, “download the PDF” for the rest
  • Take‑out by phone call only

After

  • Full‑width photography that sells the food
  • Menu with categories, search and dietary filters
  • Customize any dish and order ahead for pickup
  • Hours, location and ordering always one tap away

Try it yourself Interactive

Order a fried chicken plate for pickup.

Use the phone to place a demo order. The checklist follows along as you go.

  1. Choose a dish
  2. Customize it and add it to your order
  3. Open your order
  4. Pick a time and enter a name
  5. Review your order
  6. Place the demo order

Taps so far: 0

On the old website

  1. Zoom in to find the phone number
  2. Call during opening hours
  3. Read your order out loud and spell your name
  4. Hope nothing gets lost along the way

Simulated ordering: no payment, account, or message is ever sent.
